Lost UK travel Document

I am afraid I lost my travel document inside if the UK, I asked almost everywhere even if it was handed to the police !!

is it better to report it as lost straight away or wait couple of days maybe someone will hand it in.

Also I am a bit concerned, will it affect my eligibility for a permanent residency later on (losing the travel document)
