Flying out of the UK without BRP and re-entering with BRP visa?

Essentially, I am waiting for my BRP to come back after a leave to remain application but need to fly urgently. The suggested steps there appear to be:

1. Book a return ticket from the UK
2. Fly
3. In the destination country, apply for a replacement BRP visa
4. Return to the UK with said visa
5. Apply for a replacement BRP

Is this recommended? Does anyone have any experience with this approach?
