Hi all,
I just wanted to see whether anyone had any experience with taking their citizenship ceremony outside the UK, and whether it was difficult to accomplish or not etc?
I'm currently overseas with no idea when I'll actually be able to come back to the UK. I'm yet to receive my confirmation letter (applied almost 2.5 months ago) so that's the first hurdle to clear, but assuming by some miracle I'm lucky enough to get approved in the near-term, how likely is it that the HO will allow me to do the ceremony overseas given the situation with the virus and the postponed ceremonies all over the UK?
I know they've extended the period for ceremonies from 3 to 6 months but I would ideally like to be able to get my citizenship sooner as we have no idea how this situation will unfold and I'm very much of the opinion that I'd prefer not to delay something like this if I can somehow do it now, especially at such a volatile time. Additionally, my wife will give birth to our 2nd overseas and if I don't get citizenship before the birth, number 2 will likely be the only one in my family without citizenship by the end of 2020. Not the end of the world by any means, but a very tedious, long and expensive alternative route will need to be taken in order to get it.
I know its an option on the website (www.gov.uk/citizenship-ceremonies) and my local embassy provides the service (its listed in the consular fees), but in practice, how likely is it that HO will be OK with the ceremony being overseas? Will they leave the decision up to the consulate, as the website seems to suggest, or will they take a negative view? Might they be sympathetic given the virus situation? Any experience or thoughts are welcome.
Thanks in advance.
