UK Private Healthcare: Necessary?

Is it advisable to belong to a private medical healthcare scheme in the UK, or is the NHS quite OK? If the NHS is just fine, what advantages does one have by joining a private healthcare scheme then?

I guess very few of the successful HSMP entrants elected to join private healthcare? Would be useful to know, since this will assist in estimating expected take-home pay...

It's really up to you. I had private but decided to cancel - NHS has its shortcomings but for me it's OK - keeping in mind it's free.
