British Passport Renewal Abroad

Post by shinydp » Wed Sep 03, 2025 1:10 pm

Hello All
I hold ILR, and my husband and child hold British passports. My child's British passport is expiring in August 2026.

My child and I will be traveling abroad from November 2025 and will return in November 2026 for personal family reasons.

Can my husband apply for a passport renewal from the UK while the child is abroad? If so:

1. When can he start applying for the British passport renewal?
2. What are the processing times?
3. What is the process, and what are the document requirements?
4. On ILR how long I can stay in Abroad ?

Thanks

Passport renewals require you to send in your old British passport as a part of the process. Probably best to apply for a passport renewal before you and the child leave. Passport renewals within the UK are much faster than making it from abroad.

You can live abroad for two continuous years without losing your ILR.

BUT, keep in mind that naturalisation has its own absence requirements (no more than 270 days in 3 years and no more than 90 days in the year immediately before the date of application). So, if you intend to apply for British citizenship and have a one year absence from the UK, be aware that you will not be able to apply for naturalisation for a few months at least after returning.

Thank you Secrect Simon.

I am happy to wait for Naturalisation from ILR as my travel is more important.

If the British passport Expires in August 2026, can I apply for renewal in Oct 2025 ?

Thank you

You can renew/replace a British passport at any time, as far as I know there's no rule around this.
Personally I'm planning to renew my passport next year 6 months ahead of expiry to avoid all busy periods.

Hi Alterhase58

so my child's British passport is expiring in August 2026. She is travelling to India around Nov 2025 and will be back by Nov 2026

So can I renew her Passport in Sept 2025 ?
