Current Immigration and Employment Situation

Post by denisjoshi » Fri Oct 17, 2025 10:07 pm

I am currently on a Skilled Worker visa, which I obtained before April 2024, so the new salary threshold of £38,700 does not apply to me. At that time, I was on a higher salary.

In March 2025, I changed jobs and moved to a different SOC code with a lower salary, which was still acceptable under the old rules. I have been working in this role for some time now.

Recently, I have received an offer for a new job that falls under a different SOC code, this time classified as medium-skilled.

My questions are:

1. Am I allowed to switch from a high-skilled to a medium-skilled SOC code under my Skilled Worker visa?

2. If I do so, will this affect my eligibility for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) later on? I still have about three years left before I can apply.

3. I also have a dependent (my partner) on my visa. I have read that medium-skilled roles may not allow dependents—does this restriction apply to me as well, considering I was originally sponsored before the April 2024 rule change?

Medium skilled jobs are generally ineligible unless they are on the ISL or temporary shortage list.

Nobody can tell you if you will be eligible for ILR. Current government consultation is to restrict ILR eligibility in the near future. There are higher chances that if you are in a medium skill trade that you will have to follow 10 years route rather then 5.
As you have 3 years left my bet is that the route will face some reforms before you complete 5 years.
As per current rules as long as you meet the financial requirement you should be able to settle after 5 years.

The dependents rule is give or take the same if you held SW before April 24 and still hold it without any gaps.
