Recently recieved ILR - queries regarding dependant and child benefiit

Post by AJ001 » Thu Apr 23, 2026 8:43 am

I have recently received ILR (skilled worker) and I have a couple of queries

- Wife (skilled worker dependent) is eligible for ILR Aug 2027 with current visa expiring in July 2026. After the main applicant is dependent, what visa category to use to extend her visa and for how many years ?
- 2 UK-born babies, while the main applicant was on skilled worker route, will apply for their naturalization. Correct ?
- 1 baby is nursery going (2 years old), will apply for 15 hours child benefit under the main applicant's name (father, who received ILR). It will not affect the wife's (mother's) eligiability of ILR. Please confirm.
- Child benefit under father's name. Does it mean that each year he needs to submit a tax return to HMRC?
- Father can work as a freelancer or a company director without any restrictions?

Thanks

Extend as a dependent, see SW 26.2 (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration ... led-worker)

Children born in the UK where a parent is now settled are entitled to register as British pursuant to section 1(3) BNA 1981.

No it will not affect the dependent spouse’s application.

Tax returns are required for example if self-employed or the HMRC request them. There are some conditions for high earners who want to claim child benefit, see - https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-tax-charge

A person who is settled (has ILR) can do any job they wish (unless that job requires you to be British eg certain government jobs).
