English Language credits in Tier 1 application

Post by manishmadhok » Wed Sep 30, 2009 10:23 am

Hello All,

I need a small guidance.

I have completed Bachelor in Commerce (BCOM) from Correpondence College of University of Delhi (1996) in English language but do not have a certificate from the University to submit that medium of language was English during 3 years of study. It is also very tough to get one from university and also I am working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

I am also a Chartered Accountant from Institute of Chartered Accountants of India who have given me a certificate that Medium of study by me was English during my CA tenure. CA is treated as Masters in UK Tier 1 application process.

My question is that can I attach CA english language certificate with my application to obtain credit of 10 points or do I have to get IELTS certificate.

Please advice.

Regards

Check your institute on points based calculator to see if that can qualify for english language requirement, otherwise you have to take IELTS.

If UK NARIC compares my CA degree as equivalent to Masters would it not automatically qualify for 10 points as I have a certificate of English obtained from ICAI, India. I have requested in my letter to UK NARIC to also state whether my degree can be considered for meeting english requirements. I am not sure whether they do mention about english requirements when comparing degrees.

Pls advice

I think only way would be reference to PBS calculator, if it awards 10 points to your degree for English language then well and good otherwise you should take IELTS test.

Please see Guidance page 33 of 49:

191. Where the degree was taken in another country we will always assess it using the points based calculator on our website. The calculator contains information from UK NARIC on whether overseas qualifications are equivalent to United Kingdom Bachelors level or higher.

192. Applicants can claim points when the points based calculator confirms that the degree:
• meets or exceeds the equivalent level to United Kingdom Bachelors degree; and

• was taught to a competent standard of English equivalent to level C1 on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR).

What does PBS calculator say about your degree?

No i dont think my CA degree qualifies for 10 points as I cannot choose it to select and continue further. In short I will have to take IELTS examination.
