It already has been! Now if you mean when are the various bits to be introduced, ah well, that is another question!

For example the proposal relevant to those in with employment-type visas ... when can you get ILR? Currently four years ... and will become five years! But when? Who knows?

UK's new immigration plan ????

Post by zhassan » Wed Sep 28, 2005 12:39 pm

My question is about new proposed point system for skilled and semi skilled migration, similar to Australia/Canada.

I know about HSMP, but probably the new proposed plan is to introduce point system covering all different assessment criteria.

The British love to play politics with these types of bills. Of course it was introduced right before the election, but dont expect anything to move too fast on this. They can announce a bill or an intention to change something all they want, but the government workings are quite slow and tedious and go through several rounds of presentations, recommendations, consultations, rebuttals, and the like. Immigration is a hot button topic, but I think more people are concerned with the asylum system and other immigration than worrying about the state of people who are trying to legally enter the country and follow employment rules and will contribute. This points-based program is a little off compared to the others like Canada and Australia, with more emphasis placed on earnings than other categories that may be more relevant, and could probably use some tweaking. Let me put it this way, I wouldnt expect things to change tomorrow, but in two years the program could look completely different. It just depends on how fast they move on this and how they want to prioritize it against other issues.

Unless you are talking about the current points system?
