spouse visa... how much is enough?

Post by Gerry_Marsden » Sun Mar 05, 2006 10:43 am

I'm a uk citizen. My wife was previously issued with a UK settlement visa 2 years ago. However, we had to return to her country of residence six months ago to look after a sick relative. (We have a son so it was not practical for her to go alone). Since that time, her relative has regained enough health to be able to live independently, so we wish to return to the UK. This means we will have to re-apply for a settlement visa (I presume, anyway).

However, I have been offered a job back in the UK with considerably less money than I was earning previously. I was just wondering if anyone knows what's the minimum amount I have to earn before the authorities would consider that my wife will not need recourse to public funds? Also, do I require some minimum amount of savings as well.

Thanks for any answers

PS I wish I had known about this site when my wife made her first application.

John, you are doing a sterling job, mate.

Gerry, this is no fixed minimum, basically because housing costs vary so much. At the extremes someone living in a Mayfair penthouse and paying £25000 per month rent will clearly need a lot more income than someone living in their own home, which is mortgage free.

I accept this is not really much help for you but it merely needs to be clear that your wife will not need to claim Public Funds, as defined.

You mention your son. Do appreciate that you (and not your wife) will be able to re-start the claim to Child Benefit on your return to the UK, and also a joint claim by the two of you for Tax Credits will also be in play. That will no doubt be for Child Tax Credits, and dependent upon how low your earnings are going to be, may be for Working Tax Credit as well.

Spouse visa - earnings limit

Post by slj_ram » Wed Oct 04, 2006 4:51 pm

Hi John

I posted a query earlier and see that i had a similar question to what Gerry_Marsden had.

Am going to india in a weeks time for applying my spouse Visa. My husband is permanent resident and is on a 2000 PM job (full time) for the past two months.
Till April 2005 - He was on approximately 30K PA job
May 2005 o July 2005 - On a 14400 PA job ( We had to move to Glasgow for my job and he had to compromise on his salary for being together)
Since Aus 2005 - He had a hike and have 28K PA now.

Will this be a problem if i apply for visa now. Do you think its wise for me to apply after a couple of more months.
However to add am on workpermit now and i am on 27K PA job.MY workpermit expires soon and my employer is not ready to renew them.

Can you please advise as soon as possible. It will help me decide if i have to apply for the visa now.
Any help from the members of this forum would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Cheers
