Question 71: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the position regarding citizenship in respect of a person (details supplied). [7104/11]
Alan Shatter (Minister, Department of Justice, Equality and Defence; Dublin South, Fine Gael)

A valid application for a certificate of naturalisation from the person referred to in the Deputy’s Question was received in the Citizenship Division of my Department in October 2009.

The application is currently being processed in the normal way with a view to establishing whether the applicant meets the statutory conditions for the granting of naturalisation and will be submitted to me for decision in due course. While the average time from application to decision is 25 months, processing requirements and time taken to carry out necessary checks vary from case to case.

I am unhappy with the length of time it takes to process citizenship applications. I have initiated steps within my Department to provide for a speedier processing of applications and to bring about a substantial reduction in the time scale. When the Department is in a position to implement these new arrangements an announcement will be made.
I should remind the Deputy that queries in relation to the status of individual Immigration cases may be made direct to INIS by Email using the Oireachtas Mail facility which has been specifically established for this purpose. The service enables up-to-date information on such cases to be obtained without the need to seek this information through the more administratively expensive Parliamentary Questions process.

Hi All,
you know when educated people comes in power, they make wise decisions. Alan shatter is a barrister and he practiced law all of his life, so he know very well the ups & downs in his field.
previously, the guy smith and Ahern , both of them have nothing to do with law. so how can they make good decisions, because this is not their area of expertise.

aherne was a solicitor but did not really practice, certaintly not within an arses roar of the calibre as shatter, who was a solicitor and not a barrister (but did , unlike most solicitors actually advocate in the high court)

smith was only there to fill gaps. he had nothing to do with these problems (oh yeah the 400 plus deportation orders were probably valid and legal, the decisions had already been made before him)

michael mcdowell is one of the most immenient barristers, and he was an attorney general. was he incompent on the law? actually considering zambrano now over rules lobe and returns to the fajunou case which he was the winning barrister, maybe he was. he was not. why?

the decisions made by the irish government over the years were on political basis and not law.

considering that the government want to cut the personell in health (more important department) can't see how citizenship is going to be quicker

This is a great news!! however, once can wait for it to be implemented.#
