this may be a silly question, but what next

I've been approved for HSMP and will be going for EC next month (am in the US).

When I actually move over to UK in August, what is the appropriate next step? i'm looking for jobs now and have talked with a couple recruiters, but am not expecting to have something ready the day i move there.

Do i get my NI card? When interviewing should i bring my passport with EC stamp? Do i register with police and/or Home Office with my address in the UK?

Any advice board members have would be much appreciated!

There was a recent post on registration with the police in this section and the advice was that if you have not been explicitly told to register with the police on your arrival in the UK, then there's no need to.

Start with reading up info on this board and you'll get the sequence of things post-migration.

You can go to the local JobCentre and get your NI number once you arrive in the UK. If you are required to register with the police, your EC letter and stamp will say so. It is unlikely that you will have to do this. Be prepared to explain to prospective employers what HSMP is and how it works, as they will not know. Just focus on the EC and moving bit now and worry abotu finding a job once you arrive - it will be near impossible to get a job offer without being physically present here. Once you start working, make sure you ask to fill out the correct form to have your taxes withheld appropriately - I think it's a P60 or something. Good luck!

Hello Alison. Congratulations on your HSMP approval.

Here's a few answers based on my recent experience moving to the UK.

For the NI number, I just booked an appointment at my local job centre. They asked me to bring in, either offer of employment or 3 letters from recruiters saying they were actively working on securing me employment.

I would advise getting letters and making the appointment as soon as possible as the appointment times were pretty inflexible and would have been difficult to schedule if I was working.

With interviewing I didn't take passport along to any interviews and that was never a problem. But they did take a photocopy of passport + visa during induction.
