Applying for Citizenship - 5 years - clarification needed

Post by fiosrach » Tue Sep 06, 2011 11:01 am

Hello there. I'm an American who has been working in Ireland 3.5 years now on a work permit. It will be 4 years in April. I am also going to be marrying an Irish citizen in December. I plan to get my Stamp 4, which will allow me to seek other work if a better job comes along.

While I plan on staying put in my current job for the time being, lets say I find a better job (I know, unlikely in this climate!) and change jobs within Ireland before 5 years. Can I still apply for citizenship based on 5 years legal residence? I will have been legal for the entire time (time spent on Stamp 1 with work permit and then on Stamp 4 (but employed with different employer).

Or if I leave my current job after December and get another job, do I then forfeit my right to apply based on 5 years? (Even though I would be legal on Stamp 4).

Does this make sense? I am very interested in getting citizenship, but also want to be able to move jobs if an opportunity arises. However, if that means waiting then another 3 years (to apply as a spouse) then I might have to reconsider.

Can anyone advise?

it doesn't matter where you work, it matters that you have permission to remain stamp 1 or stamp 4, lets say, for the duration of 5 years before you apply. even if you change jobs 5 times in 5 years, it's ok.
