How at the latest can we apply for Tier 1 (General) Extn

Hi Guys,
I'm bit concerned now as my Tier 1 visa expiry is on Nov 24th 2011. Still, I haven't received my last two month bank statements which I'm expecting in a weeks time. When at the latest can I apply for my Tier 1 extension application by post?

Appreciate your help. Please tell me if you have applied lately and got your visa approved, that'll give some confidence to me, thanks.
