Wife called for interview in Malaysia - what to expect?

Post by Wonko » Wed Oct 13, 2010 11:07 am

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. We found out today that my wife has to go for an interview in Kuala Lumpur on the 28th of October. Does anyone have any experience of spouse interviews in Malaysia? Or anywhere really. Just want to know what she should expect.

They will ask your wife personal questions about you, your family, your work, how your relationship began, what your plans are for the future etc.

They will only ask questions relevant to you and your wife, not any questions which has nothing to do with your relationship as a husband and wife.

Just tell themn the simple and plain truth about each other. Nothing to worry about or have sleepless night. All they want to find out out is that your relationship is genuine

Thanks for your reply.

She went for the interview yesterday and said it was quite informal and non-threatening. They asked her the questions she'd expected to be asked. The ECO didn't give her a decision, but he spent a lot of time explaining how the visa works and how quickly she'd have to come to the UK so she could later apply for ILR. Sometimes he said "if" the visa is granted and sometimes he said "when" the visa is granted. He even used the phrase, quote, "Everything looks good."

Today the status of her application has changed to "processed application returned to courier". I can't think this could possibly be a rejection, given what the guy said yesterday, but until she has the Visa in her hands I will still be worrying!

Ha, yes, I suppose so. We've been together for six and a half years and have spent maybe five months of that in total on the same continent, so the thought that she might soon have a piece of paper in her passport that says she can be with me for real is just overwhelming. Equally, the thought that she might be rejected is terrifying. Thanks for your reply though - I know intellectually that things are 99.99% likely to be OK, butyou know how it is - that 0.01% is the only thing I can think about :-)

I am sure everything will be fine mate. Like you say there is always that 0.01 percent doubt, sometimes they have refused visa's for something that seems never major but it gets refused.

Still i don't think you will have a problem. Still waiting for my application to progress, been a month. Good to hear your application is coming to a end and best of luck to you.

Just need to vent my frustration a little bit.

VFS Global in Kuala Lumpur is staffed by total incompitents! First they charged her 30RM to have her documents couriered back once the decision on her visa had been made. They even asked her to write her address on an envelope to be sure it was correct. Now, the decision on her visa was made on the day of her interview (we are 99.9% sure it has been approved) and her documents sent by courier the following day, a Friday. Two weeks ago.

We still don't have them.

First of all, instead of using the envelope she had so carefully addressed, they put that inside a bag and then wrote out a shipping label, omitting the business name and her mobile phone number. So of course the courier couldn't find her (he just had a lot number in a shopping mall - useless without the shop's name) and the documents were returned to VFS Global. They knew this was happening because she had been in contact with them several times. So what did they do when they got her documents back? Why, forwarded them straight to the British High Comission, of course! Because "most of the returns [they] receive from customers are appeals, so [they] send them straight to the High Comission."

Then we had to wait for them to retrieve these documents from the High Comission. They did this on Tuesday this week and told my wife on the phone that they were dispatching them that day. She also made them read out the address they had written on the envelope and shipping label.

On Wednesday she called back and was told that they had just lied about sending them on Tuesday and had just sent them that day.

Today she called them because there was still no sign of the package, and discovered that her documents are in the courier's depot in Butterworth, just across the bridge from where she lives in Georgetown, Penang Island. As they stop work at five (it is after five pm there now) and don't open on weekends, it will be Monday now before she can find out what the decision is.

If, as we hope, she has the visa, everything will then have to move at the speed of light to get her ready in time to come here within the time limit. As she is quite high up in her company she needs to give two months notice to them, which would have left her with a month's grace to make preparations, sell her car, deal with her finances, etc. Now over two weeks has been wasted by VFS Global and the world's slowest courier, which apparently takes three working days to courier a package a total distance of 220 miles between two major urban centres, fifty minutes on a plane or four hours by road. I assume the clock starts ticking from the day the visa was issued, not the day she receives it.

To top it all off, the staff at VFS Global are now implying that the delay is my wife's fault for having the temerity to live outside the capital city!

I'll return on Monday, hopefully with good news. Then we will be writing a strongly worded letter of complaint. These are our lives they're playing with, and they don't even care.

Hoping for all the best for you.

Talk about incompetent staff. You should without hestitation write a letter of complaint once everything is sorted. Just ain't on, you and your wife have done everything right and your application is being delayed now because staff who don't seem to know how to do a simple job properly.

Don't let it pass Wonko.

I would not worry to much about getting here within the 3 months time limit. If you re late by a few days, it will make no difference. If you are prepared to pay a little extra in FLR fees when she comes to UK. you could delay her arrival by 2 yrs if you wish.

We got it!

Thank you everyone for all of your comments during a rather frustrating two weeks.

The ECO has post-dated the effective date of the visa until January 3rd. So, that removes the mad rush too. He did ask her when she planned to travel during the interview, so it was nice of him to put that date on the visa.

I could hear the audible sound of relief many miles from you.
Good luck for the rest of the journey towards citizenship and if you need further help come back

Congrats Wonko, like you said on my post, we both seemed to have the news on the same day.

Wishing you and your wife all the best.
