Citizenship for Son - changed name by deed poll

Post by methhyden » Thu Apr 21, 2016 6:21 am

CR001 wrote:You need to change name by deed poll, then change foreign passport to new name and then apply for citizenship.

Or, you can apply for citizenship, wait for approval and then apply for passport. Then do deed poll and then reapply for passport.

Citizenship and BC passport will only be granted in the name on the foreign passport. They are strict about this (multiple identities issue).
Hi Moderator

I changed my Son's Name through deed poll last week....he was born here and I have an appointment for NCS in May ...so would that be a problem for his application If I sent Deed pool Letter along with his application ??? or should i skip now and waiting for approval then apply this on his Passport application???

Thanks

Does your son hold a foreign passport?
Is the name on that passport different from what it has been changed to (new name) using deed poll?

Thanks for ur quick reply geriatrix , yes he does hold foreign passport and had one Leave to remain also as My Tier 1 Dependent which is expired now.
We just added one Name in his Previous name...what u suggest then as we have got Deed poll already ...Do we need to apply with using it or can we use deed poll later once he got Naturalisation and British passport so we should use it to re-apply for passport ??? would that create any problem as we got Deed poll already ???

Thanks

It is unlikely that HMPO will issue a passport in any name other than the one displayed on the foreign passport.
The above is true for adults (for sure) - as I have hinted in my first response to the OP - and may be true for minors too!

Lots of people are having trouble applying for a British passport using a name different from the one displayed in foreign passport (e.g. - women adopting spouse's surname and trying to get British passport in the adopted surname without changing name in foreign passport first).

I am not sure if you can get the name changed in the foreign passport which now doesn't have a valid visa but if the embassy (of country of your foreign nationality) has no problem with that then that's the first thing you should do. Apply for registration only afterwards. Else, you may face issues when applying for child's first passport.

Hii geriatrix

Thanks again but I checked Bristish Passport Guidance booklet.. they say if u change Name then u should provide one of the evidence in support of ur application..... either its Naturalisation certificate showing changed Name or Deed Poll Certificate and there are others in the list also....apart from original passport he has now.

So if thats the case then it would be ok or not ?? coz I am sure I can go for the local embassy also but we use English National Identity Card also as a replacement of passport to travel back home...soo my son has got both Passport and that I.D. card with Old name......?????

Thanks

I have corrected it. Try again.

Every individual can have only one identity!

The fact that the child has a foreign passport with a different name on it means that you are asking HMPO to create a new identity of the child (under new name). HMPO won't do that ... they will ask you to either change the name in the foreign passport first and then apply for British passport in the new name or have the British passport issued in the same name as is shown in the foreign passport (old name).

Just a quick query...

How about Naturalisation??? Can I apply for Naturalistion and in the mean time I will try to change the Name on Passport coz that process will take a month or more atleast ???

Thanks

Why the rush to apply for REGISTRATION for your son.

Why can't you change his foreign passport first and then apply?

If you are referring to NCS appointment, I am sure you can reschedule it.
