English Language Requirement for Naturalisation

Post by sharmadeepak123 » Mon Oct 03, 2016 4:24 pm

I am applying for my wife's naturalisation. She was a Tier 1 General dependant and then got her ILR. I have British citizenship.

She got her ILR back in 2012, but only decided to naturalise only now. I remember she did her IELTS English Language test as a requirement for Tier 1 dependant. She then took Life In Uk test for ILR.

While applying for naturalisation, I can give the Life in the UK test details, but the English language test (which is valid for 2 years), can only be used if it was used for ILR. I recollect giving that for Tier 1 General but not sure if I gave it for ILR. Does she need to re-take her English language test?

When I called up Home Office they said she needs to re-take the english test. I have had other occasions where the Home Office call centre was wrong. But does she need to re-take the English language test if she has already taken for Tier 1 General (but not for ILR).

English language test was not required for ILR in 2012. The English requirement came into effect in October 2013.

She needs B1 level from one of the HO approved test providers, link below.

I'm going to agree with CR001.

The only exeption for an older test not on the current SELT list (even if expired) is for one that was used for ILR applied after 28 October 2013. As this is not the case for the OP, a new test will need to be taken.
