How to assured HSMP people on graduate work experience

Post by simar » Wed Jan 19, 2005 10:34 am

Hi guys,
How to convince HSMP people that the position I am holding in MNC requires Graduation.
I am BE Electronics & hold the post of Engineer-Firmware in my past company. Recently I went their to take reference letter. They did provide one listing my experience . But refused to write that it require s graduate education. Through IN that company I did make trip to US from India on a on-site project work. That thing they have listed.
But still I am worried as how to convince HSMP on graduation required for the post I held. Also I could not locate Accent adv. That the company give for that post. It was 5 years time back in 1999. Please suggest me some work around. This will be my re-apply application & I do not want to take any chances. I get 0 marks earlier in experience. As insufficient evidence was the reason.

HSMP wants to see evidence that the position for which you are claiming graduate level points normally requires a degree. My understanding is that they also want to know why the position would normally require a degree -- what it is about the position that requires the skills and knowledge base that is usually aquired through university-level degree. (The degree must also be the equivalent of a UK degree).

Unfortunately, the fact that you may have such an education does not necessarily get you the HSMP points. It is the position itself that they are looking at -- in fact, it is possible for an applicant to not have a degree and still be able to claim graduate level points if the position being claimed for would normally require a degree, and the applicant is therefore functioning on a graduate level in terms of skill and experience and knowledge. It sounds like you may be someone who has a degree but who is in a job that does not neccesarily require graduate level skill and knowledge.

If the job would normally require the skills and knowledge of a university-trained worker, why is your employer declining to state that in writing for you?

If you remain convinced that your position does in fact require the skills and knowledge normally obtained via university degree, you may want to provide for the HSMP evaluating team evidence of other positions in other companies that are substantially similar to yours and which do normally require a degree. You may want to write a supplemental letter to the HSMP team (for inclusion in your re-application) explaining that this position in your industry does normally require a degree. You may want to include examples of duties, responsiblities and/or projects you have been involved in in your position that demonstrate your use of graduate-level skills and knowledge.

But, ultimately, if your position is not one in which university level degree and skill/knowledge is requuired for competently and safely performing the job, you will not be able to claim the points for "graduate level", in my opinion.

I hope that this helps, even though it may not be pleasant news.
:(

By the way, what is "Accent adv."?

Hi Zeke,
Thanks for the reply. Actually the position of Engineer-Firmware that I hold very much require graduation. When the company posted the job adv. in , the minimum qualification was listed (Bachelors degree in E& EC or computer science). That’s why I look for that newspaper adv dated 1999.
Even I could not understand why the GM-Admin refused to write that in new issued reference letter. Accordingly to him, it is understood, that one require graduation to work on such positions. I really cannot reason much with him as he simply refused. In my present company , I have no problem in showing such evidence( I am working since then in my present company) Rather now holding Program Leader position with people reporting to me.

The link you have provided is quite helpful. I have get one reference letter ( basically through his official e-mail id ) of my old program manager from US under whom I have worked in US in that company.
As such I am claiming
15 points for degree ( got earlier also)
25 points for graduate level experience ( hopefully I will got one, also contact newspaper office to give me 1999 particular hardcopy of Accent. Also will list my duties & resposnsibities)
25 points on salary ( atlast my taxable income is over 7500 pounds per annum ,I guess will show them my last 5 years tax returns too)

Also try to get 10 points for spouse education( They give 0 last time for insufficient proof of stay 2 years together. ) Hope fully with joint bank statement, child birth certificate, also home lease agreement (listed her & child'd name as co-habitant in legal doc . they might award points this time.
