Referee Question

Post by Andrew1972 » Sat Dec 09, 2023 11:32 am

Hi everyone

We are putting together the citizenship application for my wife.

When it comes to a referee who must be a “professional”. We have a friend who is a professional qualified solicitor, but he is now retired. Would the fact that he is retired mean he won’t meet the criteria for a professional referee?

Thanks

Andrew

Retired should be OK, especially if they are still members of a chartered body.

Self Employment Question

Post by Andrew1972 » Sun Dec 31, 2023 8:15 am

Hi everyone

Just about to submit my wife's citizenship application

When it came to the part about employment I'd appreciate a bit of guidance

She registered a business back in 2021 to make home made cakes. Now, she does intend to try and expand the business and make some more more money, but so far she just makes cakes on occasion and sells them, but not many, and the income is well under £1,000 per year. That means, as per the HMRC rules, she doesn't need to declare it. Having said that, she has filled out a tax return anyway, showing she has nothing to pay

Is this self employed status even worth mentioning on the application, since in the HMRC's eyes she doesn't even need to submit a tax return?

Elsewhere on the form she does submit her NI number, will that flag anything if she doesn't mention she's self employed (even though not making any money, as of yet)

Thanks!

Andrew

Best not to make assumptions as to what needs mentioning or not. All questions should be answered unless they are marked optional. If she's self-employed say so - there are no financial requirements to be fulfilled. NI number is a normal requirement, UKVI use it to locate HMRC data. Again there's no expectation as to how much NI has been paid. It's not there to trip up applicants - if nil is due that's fine.

Mention she is self-employed and attach the statement of accounts and her most recent tax return. it will be fine.

Proof of English language and Life In The UK

Post by Andrew1972 » Sun Dec 31, 2023 3:44 pm

Hi

My wife has the reference numbers that were emailed to her for passing both the required English language test, and the Life In The Uk test

We put both of these reference numbers in the application as requested. Is it also necessary for us to provide certificates as well (We only provided reference numbers for the ILR application)

Thanks

All topics merged. It is not necessary to start a new topic with every question. Please keep all questions about the same application in one topic, this one.

Did you get the B1 certificate? May as well include. Naturalisation is separate from immigration processes.

If you have the cert no harm in providing it too.
